Four Gay Weddings and an Intervention
Alternate Title: "Why I Hate Stephen Harper So Much"
So, although I am a continent away, I still hate Stephen Harper and the asinine Conservative Party very much. Despite the fact that polls showed that the majority of Canadians supported equal marriage, and an even larger majority oppose reopening the issue in Parliament, our joke of a Prime Minister has taken it upon himself to make Parliament vote again on this issue.
Now, the pro-equal marriage side is likely win again, and even if it didn't, legal experts have said that taking away these rights would now be unconstitutional. But, it's important to let your MPs know how you feel. Mostly they hear from right-wing crazys, so letting them hear the views of the silent majority is key. Please take ten seconds to visit equal-marriage.ca which has ready-made emails to send off to your MP regarding equal marriage. I appreciate it.
On a lighter note, who do you think will get gay married first; Tom and Brandon, or Ian and James?
Also on a lighter note; check out "Brokeback to the Future". Awesome.

Incidentally, my vote is for Brantom.
Am I right or what?
C'mon guys, when's the big day?
I dont know....I was going for Ian And James...
I agree with the stupidity of reopening the gay marriage issue, and think that it will retain it's popularity. However, who's to say that Harper wont bring it up again if it passes.
I doubt that the country will vote against it....bringing it up again is wishful thinking on Harpers part.
PP-- what's your reasoning for choosing Jian?
while James does seem like he'd be all over a wedding like japanese kids on pocky (the martha stewarting possibilities are endless), but Brantom have been going out forever!
OMG! I just counted --they've been going out for *eight* years! that's totally crazy! and certainly deserving of a gay wedding with a witchy lesbian minister and best-men dressed in unflattering taffeta gowns.
By the way PP, did you email your MP?
Does anyone know if the government falls if this motion doesn't carry? cause that would make me so happy if it did!
I'm routing for James and Ian, becuase they like A Clockwork orange, AND zombie movies...its purely personal reasons. LOL!
And yes, I did emial my PM
Thanks for emailing your MP. Did you email your MP in Windsor or in Niagara? I know the two Windsor MPs are both fruity NDPers, so probably safe there. I'm not sure about Niagara though.
Dan, whilst Canada seems to be de-evolving (is that even a word?) Australia has taken a tiny baby step towards equal rights and legalised civil unions in the ACT. Yay! Hopefully its a sign of things to come. In other news, I can think of another friend of yours who may be taking a trip down the aisle sooner rather than later...I'll keep you posted:)
jase-- honto ni? sugoi ne!
i hereby christen you "The J. J's"!
Tintin - I actually emailed the MP in windsor AND in St. catharines. I figured that since i'm moving out of here in like 5 weeks, i'd cover both areas.
I emailed my horribly conservative MP who opposes gay marriage.
BranTom are already practically married, they've been together forever and they are living in sin :)
The government will only fall if it declares one of its own motions to be a vote of confidence. Certain votes (like votes on the budget) are automatically confidence votes. For other votes though, the government can declare them to be or not to be confidence votes (assuming that they are the ones that introduce them). So if they think they'll lose, they'll just say its not a vote of confidence... I suppose that opposition parties could try to prevent that by introducing the motion themselves and declaring it to be a confidence issue, but I'm not sure if they can do that (they could introduce a simple vote of non-confidence, but that would be political suicide this close to the last election...)
And why is it that my MPs are always on the same side as me in any issue that I feel like speaking out about? (Olivia Chow is our MP) Not a bad thing I guess, but what do you do at that point? Just pick random MPs to e-mail?
thanks for the info jess --although that's really too bad that it wouldn't cause the government to fall.
if you're looking for something to do, you could always email the awful MP for prince edward-hastings; daryl kramp (even his name is awful).
more information about daryl kramp here
Yeah, Jess is right, it has to be a confidence vote.
Jess, some of the equal rights sites have the option to email all the MPs. I did this before and I actually got a very reasoned and reasonable response from Jim Prentice in Alberta, you could have knocked me over with a feather, it's so rare to see a fiscal conservative who is also socialy conservative. That would be my suggestion.
Long live Olivia Chow, love that woman.
As for who's getting married first, both of those couples are so unpredicatable, it's hard to say. But if anyone is having a gay wedding, I want to make it clear right now, that my dearest wish in life is to be a gay wedding planner. So call me!
I think my favourite option was those counties in Oregon who made it illegal for heterosexuals to marry. Yes, the institution is bad for everybody - just like joining the military - but why should straight people suffer alone. I'm all for sharing health insurance with whoever you want, and have so written politicians and absolved myself of the guilt of silence.
Meredith, you are so right.
